tanz die toleranz
tanz die toleranz is a program initiated by caritas wien with the aim to provide regular dance classes and performance venues for people of all ages and countries of origin. no previous dance experience is required.
2011 and 2010 caritas wien presented a selection of performative work in collaboration with the german choreographer josef eder (2011) as well as the british choreographers janice parker and tamara mclorg (2010). 60 - 70 children and adults rehearsed for four intense weeks and performed at the palais kabelwerk in december 2011 (photo series picture 1 - 24) and november 2010 (photo series picture 25 - 52). such projects challenge common prejudices and demonstrate that people can live together if they can dance together.

a year before, caritas wien collaborated with the british choreographer royston maldoom, initiator of numerous community dance projects around the globe. royston has worked with young people excluded from education, street kids, people with disability, the displaced, men and women in prison, communities in conflict or marginalised or divided by cultural, religious, social or economic circumstances. royston is convinced that dance and performance can transform the lives of individuals and communities by supporting and encouraging cohesion, comprehension, sympathy and dialogue. his work was honoured in 2005 with the project 'rhythm is it'. 250 kids performed 'le sacre du printemps' by igor stravinsky and simon rattle conducted the berlin philharmonic orchestra.
royston choreographed for caritas wien a piece to 'harmonielehre' by john adam with 100 children from different social and ethnic backgrounds. the dancers presented their work after four weeks of rehearsal time on october 9 and 10, 2009 at gasometer in vienna (photo series picture 53 - 92).
