tanz die toleranz
tanz die toleranz is an event series initiated by caritas wien with the aim to provide regular dance classes and performance venues for kids with an immigrant background.
caritas wien collaborated in 2009 with the british choreographer royston maldoom, initiator and leader of numerous community dance projects around the globe. royston has worked with people in very different situations: children and young people in and excluded from education, street kids, people with disability, the displaced, men and women in prison, communities in conflict or marginalised or divided by cultural, religious, social or economic circumstances. his passion is to give all of them the opportunity to transform, through the medium of contemporary dance, their view of themselves, their abilities and their potential, and to change where necessary the way in which others view and judge them. royston is convinced that dance and performance can transform the lives of individuals and communities; supporting and encouraging comprehension, cohesion, sympathy and dialogue. his work was especially honoured in 2005 with the project 'rhythm is it' when 250 kids danced 'le sacre du printemps' by igor stravinsky in collaboration with sir simon rattle and the berlin philharmonic orchestra.
this time royston choreographed a piece to 'harmonielehre' by john adam with 100 children from various social and ethnic backgrounds as part of tanz die toleranz. the dancers presented their work after four weeks of intensive rehearsal time on october 9 and 10, 2009 at gasometer in vienna. both nights were sold out and very well received by the public.
I felt greatly honored to be part of the team and support tanz die toleranz. for more detailed information click here.
